中央アメリカ原産のバニラは、19世紀のフランス植民地において優れた農産物であり、主にインド洋と太平洋の島々で栽培された。当初は高級品だったバニラだが、20世紀には大量消費者向けの製品となった。バニラは生産するのに最も高価な農産物の1つであるため、海狸香、紙パルプ派生品、そして今日では牛糞を含むさまざまな代替品がバニラと競合するようになったのである。 合成バニラは大幅な発展を遂げ、現在も増産を続けている。 米国を含む最大のバニラ輸入国では、合成バニラの使用が1933 年から1963 年の間に700%増加した。本講演は特に、バニラを生産する島々 (マダガスカル、レユニオン、コモロ諸島等） が、バニラ風味の合成製品の容赦ない増加を阻止しようとした1960 年代の極めて重要な時期に焦点を当てる。 生産地の島民は下限価格を確立しようとし、大規模な広告キャンペーンを開始し、欧州経済共同体（EEC）と協力して措置を講じた。 彼らの対策にフォーカスし、人工合成食品としてスーパーマーケットの棚からほぼ消えてしまった本物のバニラの意味するものを問う。

エリック・ジェニングスは、カナダのトロント大学教授。フランス植民地史を専門とする。著書に『La France Libre fut Africaine』 (Perrin、2014) 、 「Les Bateaux de l'Espagne」 (CNRS、2020) がある。 目下、バニラの世界史を準備中。

Speaker: Aleksandra Kobiljski, Senior Research Fellow (French National Research Center CNRS)  

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the European Commission launched a policy discussion on the theme of "Industry 5.0." While much of the policy debate centers around the aim of moving beyond efficiency and productivity as the twin goals of industry, it is also necessary to rethink the concept of efficiency in order to understand industry's continuing role in wider society. Redefining these parameters is as much a question of social imagination as it is a matter of technical capacity. Human experience remains a remarkably under-utilized resource in discussions of industrial efficiency and of industry's role in society. Drawing on concrete examples from Japan's industrial experience, this talk contributes to a rich vein of dialogue surrounding Industry 5.0 and the goals of our global industrial future. 

Aleksandra Kobiljski is a historian working on early Japanese industry. She currently runs J-InnovaTech, a European Research Council (ERC) funded project that looks into the structures of innovation and resilience in the strategic industries of 19th century Japan. Her research draws on human experiences in the recent past to enhance current understanding of industrial efficiency and performance metrics. Before joining CNRS, she taught history of technology at Harvard University. From 2018 to 2023, she was the director of the Japan Research Center at the School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences in Paris where she currently heads the Working Group on Environment, Industry and Technology.

L'inauguration de l'époque Edo amène avec elle une série de bouleversements économiques et environnementaux : la monétisation de l'économie, l'essor des métropoles marchandes ainsi que le développement de la culture des cash crops (incluant le coton et le tabac) introduites par les Européens. Le boom démographique ainsi que l'essor en construction de châteaux forts comme d'infrastructures reliant les villes ensemble exercent en retour une pression extraordinaire sur les forêts de l'archipel, menant Conrad Totman à qualifier l'époque Edo comme en étant une de déforestation massive. 
Ce projet de thèse se penche, conséquemment, sur l'émergence parallèle d'un rapport sensible à la forêt ainsi qu'au réseau littéraire et historique qu'il invoque, notamment en poésie et en peinture. Il s'agira dès lors de montrer les changements dans la représentation poétique et picturale de la forêt. La mise en parallèle des œuvres de Hasegawa Tōhaku et de l'école Kanō, de Matsuo Bashō et de Kitamura Kigin, démontrera la prise de conscience de la dégradation des forêts de l'archipel ainsi que des problèmes esthétiques, moraux et intellectuels qu'elle engage. 

Précédemment étudiant-chercheur à l'université de Kyoto et à l'université de Montréal, Philippe DEPAIRON poursuivra dès l'automne son doctorat en histoire de l'art à l'université Columbia. Sous la direction de Matthew McKelway, sa thèse se penche sur les conditions économiques et environnementales du XVII^e siècle et les rapports changeant à la forêt en peinture.
