Summary
This seminar is based on research carried out by Bruno Amann, Carole Jean-Amans (University of Toulouse 3, France), Jacques Jaussaud and Boqi Zhang (University of Pau, France).
Reports in the economic press suggest that it is no longer rare for multinationals from emerging countries to cooperate with local SMEs when trying to enter developed markets. Despite the commonly held fear of predatory behaviour, we use examples of Chinese firms investing in French SMEs to illustrate how asymmetries between the companies involved may be a source of potential alliances and joint business developments. Nevertheless, these asymmetries were often regarded as weaknesses, either for the Chinese firms—because of their geographical origin—or for the French SMEs—because of their small size. A desire to overcome these weaknesses by strategically combining asymmetries may explain not only the motives of Chinese companies investing in developed-market SMEs, but also the outcome of such investments. We strive to highlight the characteristics of Chinese investments in French SMEs through a comparison with Japanese investments in France.
