The aim of this symposium is to reconsider the international artistic and cultural exchanges in the twentieth century, focusing mainly on art and culture, particularly dance. Leading dance studies scholars will present and discuss famous artists – Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubinstein, Antonia Mercé, to name a few – who performed in Europe, especially in France; but we will also consider the American performers such as Alvin Ailey, and, Asian artists. The flowering of the arts, in all its forms, becomes a global phenomenon due to the transnational, transoceanic movements with modern forms of communication of the last century. The major features and the importance of remarkable women in this extraordinary growth will be discussed, focusing on the internationalization of art and culture, and what might happen in the future.
