Au cours des 20 dernières années, la société égalitaire et dynamique du Japon s'est mutée en une société vieillissante qui montre de multiples exclusions et inégalités. Certaines sont anciennes comme celles liées au genre, d'autres plus nouvelles avec la montée du chômage. Une grande variété de projets de recherche peuvent contribuer à comprendre cette transformation. 		— The Reshaping of the Social Structure: Social Inclusion and Social Exclusion

During the last 20 years, the Japanese society, egalitarian and dynamic, has turned to become an ageing society showing multiple exclusions and inequalities. Some are old ones as those linked to gender, others ones are new in relation to rising unemployment. A large variety of research projects may help to understand this transformation.

Jusqu'aux années quatre-vingts le modèle du Japan Inc. des années d'après guerre constituait la forme achevée de la relation entre sphère publique et sphère privée, entre gouvernement central et grandes entreprises. Depuis, les dynamiques localisées prennent le relais, avec une certaine décentralisation, des actions de PME et de citoyens qui redessinent les relations public-privé et en multiplient les niveaux dans de nombreux domaines qu'il nous faut analyser.

Until the eighties, the Japan Inc. post-war era model stood as the achieved relationship between the public sphere and the private one, between the central government and the largest enterprises. Since that time, local dynamics have emerged, with more decentralization, with actions from SMEs and citizens which redesign the public-private relationships creating multiple levels in many fields that must be carefully studied.

Le Japon a été souvent considéré comme réagissant à des impacts extérieurs, comme un suiveur. On commence à prendre conscience de son rôle actif pour de nombreux enjeux asiatiques et mondiaux. Le Japon souhaite renforcer sa participation active sur plusieurs questions économiques, juridiques et politiques. Japan has often been considered as acting in response to external stimuli, as a follower. Many observers have become aware that Japan plays an active role regarding several questions at stake in Asia and in the rest of the world. Japan is willing to participate actively in economical, legal and political issues. This is an important field of research.
